Lessons in Strength: My Interview with Eddie Hall

Recently, I had the chance to sit down with Eddie Hall, one of the strongest men in the world, to talk about strongman, records, and the mindset it takes to push human limits. Listening to Eddie share his thoughts was both inspiring and eye-opening. Here’s what he had to say.

Respect for Fellow Athletes

Eddie reflected on Thor’s performance over the weekend and emphasized the respect he has for his fellow competitors. Even when personalities don’t always align, Eddie made it clear: he will always respect what Thor can do.

“His strength, his dedication, and the records he’s set—there’s no denying he’s an incredible athlete,” Eddie said.

Limits and Potential

Eddie spoke about limits and potential, noting that even the most impressive lifts often hide even greater possibilities. People sometimes say taller athletes struggle with deadlifts, but Eddie disagrees.

“Longer levers can mean more potential for muscle and growth. Watching someone like Thor is inspiring.”

Setting Benchmarks and Inspiring Others

Records aren’t meant to stand forever—they’re meant to be broken. Eddie shared his experience chasing a 500-kilo lift back in 2016. At the time, the record was 463 kilos, and many thought 500 was impossible.

“If no one had tried to push it, maybe we’d still be stuck at 470,” he explained.

He compared it to Roger Bannister breaking the four-minute mile—once someone shows it’s possible, others quickly follow.

“Strength isn’t just physical; it’s mental. Believing something is possible can change everything.”

Legacy and the True Measure of Strength

Reflecting on Thor’s lifts and his own journey, Eddie shared why he competes and why he respects the athletes around him.

“Strength is personal, but the pursuit of it inspires everyone who witnesses it. The trophies, the records—they’re meaningful, but the respect and legacy we leave behind matter even more.”

For Eddie, it’s about pushing limits, inspiring others, and knowing that what we do on the platform—and in life—can set the stage for someone else to surpass us.
